Relationship Issues

True or false: “happily ever after” is just a myth.

It’s easy for new couples in an exciting phase of their relationship to feel 100% sure that they’re on the road to happily ever after.  However, couples that have been together for a while know for sure that every couple faces their share of challenges. Certainly, the happiest couples over the course of their relationship, know that a good relationship takes work.  To sum it up, the only part of “happily ever after” that is a myth is the idea that it just automatically happens. Marriage counseling can play a big role in building a healthy relationship.

Normal issues can threaten even the strongest marriages

It’s completely normal to be stressed by every day life.  As individuals, we each need to find healthy ways to manage that stress.  Likewise, this is even harder for couples. All too often, it’s easy to fall into negative relationship patterns and let problems fester.  Meanwhile, this can create emotional distance over time which is so dangerous to marriages.

Marriage counseling can help with:

  • Crises
    • Infidelity
    • Addiction
    • Illness
  • Day-to-day
    • Technology
    • Work stress
    • Money
    • Housework
    • Parenting
  • Habits
    • Unresolved arguments
    • Poor communication
    • Emotional distance
    • Boundaries
    • Waning appreciation
  • Family
    • Balance (Work/Life/Family)
    • Blended Families
    • Extended Family

Gottman Method

Our primary approach to marriage counseling is based on the Gottman Method. This method is based on over 40 years of research about why relationships succeed or fail.

Certainly, even couples with “normal” problems may benefit from couples therapy. As a result, in relationship counseling, your therapist will help you

  • build on your relationship’s unique strengths,
  • recognize unhealthy patterns,
  • learn healthier ways to cope with issues,
  • learn how to communicate your feelings and needs,
  • work through the biggest challenges.

During relationship counseling, we offer an online assessment tool: Gottman Relationship Checkup. This tool walks each person through their views on important issue sin the relationship, including: friendship, intimacy, emotions, conflict, values, trust, parenting, housework, finances.  Most importantly, this tool allows us to more thoroughly assess the overall relationship and tackle the most important issues right away.
