you shouldn't have to choose between good therapy and paying your bills

Maybe you've been putting off therapy because it didn't feel financially realistic. Maybe you've wondered whether specialized trauma therapy was simply out of reach.

We think there should be another option.

At Empower Counseling, we offer multiple price points while training every therapist in the same thoughtful, relational approach that helps clients move beyond coping with symptoms and into deeper, lasting change.

Let's Talk About The Tradeoff

Most people assume therapy is a choice between affordability and specialization.

We don't think it has to be.

At Empower Counseling, we've chosen to focus on a smaller range of concerns rather than trying to be everything to everyone. We specialize in helping people understand the patterns that often develop in response to complex trauma, including anxiety, burnout, people pleasing, masking, relationship struggles, and emotional overwhelm.

Like any profession, therapists develop expertise over time. Experience matters. So does focus.

Our newer therapists are still building experience, but they're doing so within a collaborative practice intentionally designed around deeper work, ongoing supervision, and specialized training.

We believe therapy should be more accessible without becoming more generic.

Because when it comes to therapy, like in life: one size does not fit all.

We Train Therapists Differently

Most graduate programs train therapists to be generalists. They learn a little about a lot of different concerns, populations, and treatment approaches.

That's an important foundation.

But learning a little about everything is different from developing deeper expertise.

At Empower Counseling, we've intentionally chosen a narrower focus. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, we specialize in helping people understand the patterns that often develop in response to complex trauma and difficult life experiences.

Many of the people we work with struggle with anxiety, burnout, people pleasing, masking, relationship difficulties, emotional overwhelm, or the feeling that they're working harder than everyone else just to get through the day. These patterns can develop for many reasons, including relational trauma, chronic illness, identity-related stress, neurodivergence, and other experiences that require people to adapt in order to feel safe, accepted, or understood.

If everything is a specialty, nothing is a specialty.

That's why our therapists receive focused training, supervision, and support in the areas we know best. We believe therapists become more effective when they're given the opportunity to go deeper rather than trying to master everything all at once.

Making Therapy More Accessible

We know that cost is one of the biggest reasons people put off therapy. Not because they don't want help or don't care about their mental health, but because life is expensive. Between rent, mortgages, childcare, medical bills, student loans, and everything else competing for attention, therapy can start to feel like something you'll get to "someday."

We believe specialized therapy shouldn't be reserved only for people who can afford the highest fee. That's why we've intentionally created multiple pathways into care while maintaining the same philosophy that guides all of our work.

Our goal is to make affordable trauma therapy more accessible without becoming more generic.

Pay-What-You-Can Therapy

Our intern therapists offer a pay-what-you-can model because we believe more people deserve access to thoughtful, specialized care.

Unlike many lower-cost therapy options, our intern therapists aren't practicing in isolation. They receive ongoing training, supervision, consultation, and support within a practice that specializes in complex trauma and EMDR.

They are learning how to help clients understand the patterns that often develop in response to complex trauma, build the resources needed for deeper work, and move therapy forward in a thoughtful and intentional way.

Our more experienced therapists charge rates that reflect their additional training, specialization, and years of clinical experience. The pay-what-you-can model creates another pathway into the same philosophy of care for people who need a more accessible option.

Been waiting for therapy to feel more financially possible?

If cost has been one of the things standing between you and therapy, this may be the opportunity you've been waiting for.

More Than The Problem of the Week

Many people come to us after years of trying to feel better.

They've learned coping skills. Read the books. Listened to the podcasts. Maybe they've even been in therapy before.

What they're often missing isn't effort.

It's a framework for understanding why the same patterns keep showing up.

That's why our therapists are trained to look beyond symptoms and explore the bigger picture.

understand your story

You don't need to have all the answers before you start therapy. Together, we'll make sense of what's happening now and how your experiences may still be shaping your life today.

build resources

Therapy isn't about pushing through. It's about creating enough safety, support, and stability that change becomes possible.

identify patterns

The things that frustrate you most often make perfect sense in context. Together, we'll explore the patterns underneath the anxiety, burnout, relationship struggles, and self-doubt.

move forward

Good therapy shouldn't feel like starting over every week. We help clients connect the dots, build momentum, and create meaningful change over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an intern therapist a real therapist?
Yes. Our intern therapists are graduate-level clinicians completing their master's degree and clinical training. They work directly with clients while receiving supervision, consultation, and support from qualified supervisors and experienced trauma therapists.
How much does therapy with an intern therapist cost?
Intern therapists typically charge $125 per session and offer a pay-what-you-can model for clients who need additional flexibility. We'll talk through options during your consultation.
Can an intern therapist do EMDR?
EMDR requires specialized training and experience. Intern therapists help clients build many of the foundations that support effective trauma work, including understanding patterns, building resources, and preparing for deeper work. When appropriate, they may collaborate with one of our EMDR-trained therapists.
How do I know if an intern therapist is right for me?
Choosing a therapist is about much more than price. Our intern therapists are qualified, prepared, and supported. Because they typically carry smaller caseloads, they often have more time for supervision, consultation, reflection, and thoughtful treatment planning. The best fit depends on your goals, preferences, budget, and what feels right to you.
What if I start with an intern therapist and later want something different?
That's completely okay. One benefit of working within a group practice is that you have options. If your needs change, we'll help you explore the best next step.

You don't have to choose between good therapy and paying your bills.
